| The Big Kahoona! Pieces of Broken Glass by Dante Persechino By now you must have heard of the Terri Schiavo case; it is all over the news. Michael Jackson is in the news for alleged child molestation charges. Robert Blake has been acquitted for the murder of his wife. Children are going into schools around the country shooting and killing others. Terrorists are bombing in the name of their gods.
I sit in front of my television at night and almost get to the point of becoming physically ill. I am so disenfranchised with society that it is all that I can do to watch the news at all! We have such a very short time on this earth that I cannot understand the concept of hurting anyone for such a small and insignificant gain that one may obtain from acts such as these. It doesn't matter if you are a liar in court against your brother to obtain a monetary allowance, or the murder of a friend, family member or complete stranger, it is all blind evil in my eyes. Where are you going to spend all that money? In what conscience are you going to spend the rest of your, short life, huddling over your vast fortune, presumed freedom or other perceived gain? A few great lines from a good movie come to mind when I see such atrocities happening in front of my eyes. The line from the movie "The Green Mile", performed by Michael Clarke Duncan is: "Mostly, I'm tired of people being ugly to each other," I'm tired of all the pain I feel in the world." "There is to much of it,...its like pieces of broken glass in my head all the time." This, to me, sums up what goes on in the world, how people treat each other and how it affects me in my daily life. If only people would contemplate the pain that they cause others and match that against the futility of trying to gain and horde riches on this earth. If only they would realize the futility of their own minds and how imperfect and flawed our thought processes are. They would realize that our views and positions are eschewed and corrupt when it comes to our selfish childlike desires and wants. We are a jealous, nasty, hateful people in need of redemption. Yet few of us realize this fact and most of us prescribe to the theory that man is on the road to enlightenment and knowledge. Nothing could be further from the truth. I believed that the people who commit these crimes are truly tortured souls and desperately in need of help. I don't live with my head in the sand, and I am not ignorant to the fact that these individuals perform these acts to try to further there standing in society or to better position themselves in the pecking order of life, to get to a perceived, better plain of existence or to fulfill some sick twisted ideal of sex, love or acceptance. What they don't realize is that they are allowing society to dictate their measure of success and not create their own system by which they measure accomplishment. Our views on success, as a whole, have become twisted and perverted. We believe that to be a success, we either have to have all the money in the world, have the body of a super model or have every sick, deranged desire fulfilled. Can't people see that these things are fleeting? If you subscribe to this ideal, you may one day realize that soon, very soon, we will all be dust, and the only thing that we would have created in this life is misery for ourselves and others!
