The Big Kahoona!
A New Year’s Note

At this time of year, you hear all kinds of claims, by manufacturers, that they care so much about you. They court you, whilst touting their wears, with images of ultra-hip young people having the time of their lives, then zing you with a catchy little slogan, to "drink responsibly"!

Now, let’s think about this logically. Does an alcohol manufacturer really give a rat’s back side what you do with their product? Taking the grand spectrum of things into consideration, I really don't believe that they do. I am sure that if they had a choice they wouldn't want you to consume their product and then create a tragedy, yet I cannot get over the feeling that in the end, this issue is not foremost on their minds. This issue seems, in my mind, akin to cigarette manufacturers selling you a product, that clearly causes cancer, and then stating that cigarettes are bad for you and that you should stop.

Yet, this is not the real reason why I am writing to you today. I don't write this particular column because I am trying to point out that sellers of their wares don't care about us, I am writing this particular column because, the government, doesn't seem to care about us!!

If the government cared much about us, wouldn't they enact a law that would make it illegal to serve you more than two alcoholic drinks to you, at one time, in one place? Why, you ask, would they do that, if they cared so much about us?

Well, the Big Kahoona will answer you, and in a timely and cerebrally logical fashion, as usual. If our government, cared so much about us, they would make it illegal for us to imbibe more than two drinks at your local bar, pub or tavern, because that is the legal maximum for you to have in your body to drink and drive. It is illegal for anyone driving or not to have more than two drinks worth of alcohol in their system when leaving a tavern. If you have more than that, you are a criminal. If you are found in a motor vehicle with more than the two drinks in your system, you are guilty of being inebriated while operating a motor vehicle. If you leave a tavern while having more than two drinks worth of alcohol in your system, you are guilty of public drunkenness.

Either way, you consuming more than two alcoholic drinks, while at a public place, makes you a criminal in the eyes of the law. So if all the rhetoric out there today was true, about how they really care for us (i.e., the government and concerned interest groups), they would be fighting, right now, for tougher legislation to make it illegal to serve you more than two drinks in a public restaurant, tavern or pub.

I will now tell you why they don't want that legislation to be passed. The reason no one in the government, and no one in a concerned interest group, would fight for such legislation is because they would put bars and pubs across the country out of business. If you could only be served two drinks in a bar at a time, they wouldn't make any money from you, and would eventually file for bankruptcy. This would not make the government happy, because they only get their tax dollars from people in business to make money. Putting people out of business who make their money from selling you as much alcohol as possible would not make the government feel too happy. They wouldn't get that nice cozy feeling when they rustled our tax dollars in between their fingers.

It would be easy to enact legislation to stop bars from serving an individual more than two drinks, yet it will never happen, and people will continue to be arrested for alcohol related crimes. So the message the government seems to be sending to us, is to do what you want, as long as you don't get caught.

I am not living in the world of make believe and I know that it is up to an individual to be responsible for his or her actions. I know that the individual could just go to several bars or their homes to get loaded, but I think that some kind of legislation like this would help to curb the individual from making bad decisions.

People who are drinking, usually aren't thinking, so let’s make laws now to protect even those who may be inclined to break them. Protect us from ourselves and each other.
