Entertainment vs. Real Life

August 17, 2005: After hearing someone say to me, "I understand how to manage my financial life---I watch CNBC," I thought it was time for a big disclosure from someone who frequently uses the media to reach people about financial matters. WARNING: do not use the mainstream media as the only means to manage your money. It takes more than Suze Orman, Jim Cramer or Jill and David to find the answers to your particular financial questions.

It just makes sense doesn’t it? While there can certainly be helpful generalizations to take away from various talking heads, I can’t imagine that anyone who presents information through the media thinks that every piece of advice applies to everyone watching and listening. If one of these gurus actually believes that what he or she says does apply to the entire audience, my guess is that they have forgotten what it is like to experience real people’s problems firsthand.

This may seem frustrating to someone who is diligently taking notes while watching TV or listening to the radio. "Didn’t you just tell the guy before me to use a thirty year fixed rate mortgage?" Yes, we did, but for the second caller, an adjustable rate mortgage made more sense. The change in the recommendation has everything to do with the particular circumstances in each caller’s life.

Of course there are some hard and fast rules that we can give people: don’t run up credit cards, try to establish an emergency reserve fund, use your retirement plan, but most know that they should do these things. The harder part is to get people to see that only by starting with the big picture can they hope to create long term financial stability. And yet we still find that individuals concentrate on their investments rather than the issues that are far more important.

Who can blame them? It’s more fun to watch Jim Cramer rant and rave about his favorite stock rather than hear us talking to someone about his life insurance needs. But nobody said that managing your financial life was supposed to be fun. The danger of watching any of these shows hoping for a stock pick (who says you should be investing in stocks anyway?) or guidance about your money management is that you could be confusing entertainment with your need to create a plan which will help you focus on your real life financial needs and objectives.
