Tax Tip of the Week
Maximize Your 2005 Retirement Savings

Are you on track to contribute the maximum you can to retirement plans this year? The recent talk about social security reform has highlighted the need for personal savings in addition to the government programs. Here are a few tips and reminders:

If your company offers a matched 401(k) program, try to contribute at least enough to earn the full match. If your company will match, say, 30 cents on the dollar, that’s like earning an immediate 30% return on your contribution.

If you can afford to save more, do so. Savings grow free of tax in a 401(k) until withdrawn. The maximum 2005 contribution if you're under age 50 is $14,000.

If you’re age 50 or older, take advantage of the catch-up contributions to IRAs, 401(k) plans, and SIMPLE plans. Remember, in the year you turn 50, you don’t have to wait until after your birthday to make the contribution.

If you’re self-employed, look into the solo 401(k) plans now becoming available.

Generally, with tax-advantaged plans, contribute the most you can as early in the year as possible. That way your contribution will have longer to grow and compound free of tax.

Even if you don’t qualify for a Roth IRA or a regular tax-deductible IRA, you can still contribute to a nondeductible IRA. You won’t get a tax break on your upfront contribution, but your earnings will grow tax-free.
