| Doctors Corner Adult Health Concerns by Gilbert J. Altongy, MD Do not be afraid or embarrassed to have a medical examination. Do not be too confident in your "excellent health" because you are feeling great. Let your trustworthy physician tell you about your state of health. Establish a permanent relationship with a physician of your choice based on complete confidence, trust and mutual respect. You should consider your physician as a professional friend, a compassionate family member, always available to advise you and guide you whenever you need his or her assistance. Modern medicine today is emphasizing prevention by identifying multiple cardio-vascular risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, obesity, smoking and substance abuse and its treatment. Mammography, pap smear and colonoscopy are some of the diagnostic studies that will help to treat the disease in its early stage so complications can be prevented. Diet, exercise and behavioral modification are very important, but may not be sufficient. Your physician tries to make the best judgment about the appropriate medication for your condition. Be compliant with your daily medication. Do not double the dose if you missed your morning or evening dose. If you are really concerned about your health or care about your loving family, keep up with your scheduled visits and do not miss your daily medications. Doctor Altongy is a graduate of Lyon School of Medicine and Pharmacy, France. He completed his Internal Medicine and Family Medicine Residencies at Memorial Hospital of RI and also completed a Cardiology Fellowship. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Brown University and has an Internal Medicine and Cardiology practice in Central Falls. Gilbert J. Altongy, MD Remember, this advice is general in nature and may not apply to your specific problem or illness. If you have any questions, call your personal doctor.
