Raise Your Glass
Ask The Expert

It’s that time of year when people are looking for a gift for the boss, a favorite relative, a helpful neighbor, or the couple hosting a holiday party. When it comes to shopping, your favorite neighborhood liquor store can serve up a round of fun and festive gift items.

Because the wine and spirits industry has become so much more diverse today than in years past, gift sets have changed as well. It’s no longer just a box of traditional cut glass tumblers paired with a bottle of Scotch. Today, there are all kinds of stylish stemware and barware products packaged with your favorite spirits to choose from.

For example, Boru Vodka offers an elegant boxed set featuring a two-piece martini chiller, consisting of a clear glass bowl embellished with the Boru logo and a smoked black stemless martini glass. You fill the bowl with ice, make a martini, and rest your martini glass in the bowl to keep it cold.

Hpnotiq, in the eye-catching blue bottle, is offering an elegant hand-blown, aqua martini glass with the purchase of a 750 ml bottle. The metallic silver carton also includes a mail-in coupon to order additional Hpnotiq signature martini glasses.

Also attractive is the Finlandia holiday gift set, which pairs a 750 ml bottle of the premium spirit with a stemless martini glass, and Ciroc vodka, which is boxed with a pair of innovatively designed, short-stemmed martini glasses.

More choices for martini drinkers on your list are the Belvedere holiday gift set, which consists of a 1.75 ml bottle of this top-selling vodka along with an engraved martini pitcher, and Grey Goose, which offers a long-stemmed, frosted martini glass with a bottle of 750 ml Grey Goose L’Orange.

For wine lovers, there is a wide selection of gift sets and gift baskets, at various price points, to choose from. Among them is a Forest Glen boxed set, which includes a bottle of chardonnay and merlot in a blue gift box with a wintry scene, and a Luna di Luna package which combines two of the best-selling blends: the red bottled merlot/cabernet and blue bottled chardonnay/pinot grigio.

Among the more unique items this year is Johnnie Walker Gold’s gift pack, which includes a 750 ml bottle of Johnnie Walker Gold with two tall, thin glasses in a box that converts to an ice pack; and the Bacardi 8 Millennium Decanter, which offers the fine spirit as well as a certificate to "register" the rare Baccarat bottle it comes in.

This season, Southern Comfort comes packaged in a collectible tin featuring a holiday scene by New Orleans artist Matt Rinard, and Chambord Liqueur offers a limited edition "La Celebration" holiday ornament.

Perennial favorites such as Baileys Original Irish Cream is now available in a gift tin that features a 750 ml bottle packaged with two special glasses, while Irish Mist and Frangelico both come packaged in a boxed set that includes a 750 ml bottle and two attractive glasses.

Coffee drinkers will appreciate a bottle of Starbucks Cream Liqueur that is combined with a $5 Starbucks gift card, or the Brady’s Irish Cream Liqueur gift box which offers a green and gold coffee mug.

For something special, Courvoisier XO Imperial is being offered this year in a gift box that includes a 50 ml bottle of Exclusif and a metal cannon replica that celebrates the rich history of the brand, while Presidential Aged Tawny Port comes with a bottle resembling an old ship’s decanter.
