Bertucci’s Brick Oven Ristorante

"I’ve decided to buy a new car," my friend Oswaldo began. "I know that you don’t know a thing about automobiles, except how to drive one but I don’t want to go alone. Come with me and then we’ll go to lunch." After looking at Fords, Toyotas and some very jazzy Volkswagens, Oswaldo proclaimed, "I’ve seen enough for one morning. Since we’re in East Providence, let’s try Bertucci’s. I’ve heard some wonderful things about their food." My good friend and monthly luncheon companion wasn’t telling me anything that I didn’t already know. I’ve been enjoying the great food offered by this popular chain of family-style Italian ristorantes for years and can proudly say that I have never had a bad meal at Bertucci’s. I’ve enjoyed dozens of lunches and dinners at several locations throughout the Northeast.

Once we were seated, our friendly wait server delivered some piping hot rolls, so warm that the pats of butter that accompanied the bread soon flowed like golden lava through the soft yeasty puffs. "These are the best rolls I’ve ever eaten," Oswaldo proclaimed. "I could eat a dozen, but then I wouldn’t have room for lunch." My dining companion and I chose to start our meal with a bowl of Bertucci’s famous sausage soup ($2.79 cup; $4.49 bowl). The delicious, hearty soup was filled with long grain rice, spinach, tomatoes and sweet Italian sausage, and proved to be the perfect remedy for a blustery, snowy day. Without missing a beat, our server delivered our entrees.

I thought Oswaldo’s eyes would pop out of his head when he was presented with one of the four "Express Lunch Pasta" selections. He decided to order the ravioli ($7.39), and was pleasantly delighted with his choice. The generous serving of home-style ravioli was overstuffed with a blend of ricotta, Parmesan, Romano and fontina cheeses. It was topped with a zesty tomato sauce, nicely spiced and studded with fresh basil. "Squisito," my buddy proclaimed. "I bet you didn’t know I could speak a few words in Italian. This dish is absolutely superb," he continued. "It’s just like being in Italy!"

After reviewing Bertucci’s extensive menu, I chose the grilled rosemary Panini sandwich ($7.29). Served on crispy cheese bread, my selection featured a savory grilled chicken breast grilled with rosemary and lemon and topped with roasted zucchini, fresh tomato slices and greens. I was impressed with the freshness of the ingredients that were combined to create the delicious, healthy sandwich. A generous side of pasta salad accompanied my sandwich. While I was indeed very pleased with my selection, the Polpette (meatball) Panini ($7.29) also caught my attention. I’ve enjoyed Bertucci’s oven-roasted meatballs before with pasta: In this sandwich, they’re served with a topping of fresh provolone cheese and a dash of the restaurant’s rich tomato "gravy."

We ended our meal with an aromatic cup of coffee and shared an ample serving of Tiramisu ($5.29). The classic Italian dessert consisted of espresso and rum-soaked cake, filled with a luscious blend of mascarpone cheese and feathery-light whipped cream, all sprinkled with rich cocoa. "Isn’t this wonderful?" Oswaldo asked, eyeing what remained of the lavish treat. "Do we really have to share this dessert?"

Noting that Bertucci’s is renowned for its traditional brick oven pizzas, my friend suggested that we order one to enjoy later in the day, since we’d be too tired to cook supper after browsing in automobile showrooms for hours. Several offerings caught our attention, but we finally settled on the Shrimp Bella Venezia pizza ($11.49 small; $18.99 large). We savored the delicately light, crispy crust, which was topped with shrimp, garlic, crushed red pepper, fresh herbs, diced plum tomatoes, mozzarella and an unusual yet refreshing lemon-pepper cream sauce. "I can see why ‘white pizzas’ are all the rage," my friend observed, reaching for a third slice. "All this talk about cars and spending money makes me nervous, and when I am agitated, you know I like to eat!"

Bertucci’s also serves a variety of tempting appetizers, calzoni, salads and entrees, in addition to more than a dozen traditional and Neapolitan brick oven pizzas. You can even design your own pizza from an extensive list of ingredients including: roasted eggplant, sun-dried tomatoes, rosemary ham, broccoli florets, caramelized onions and roasted garlic. "Aren’t you glad we ate at Bertucci’s?" Oswaldo inquired. "I knew you’d like it. Now if I could only get you to help pay for a new car."
