Summer Round-up

Now that the warm weather has finally gotten under way, there are lots of summertime menus and venues that are worth checking out. Downstairs, the aptly named bistro downstairs from 2^nd Story Theater on Market St. in Warren, has added some summer time lilt to its menu with items like their house-made crab cakes with lemon-thyme ailol ($14) and a frutti de mare Caesar salad that features shrimp, scallops and a crab cake over romaine lettuce, sugar snap peas and house-made croutons ($17).

Chef John Michael’s usual blend of Asian and American flavors is still a real draw with treats like his Thai BBQ mixed grill and his mesquite-smoked burger. There’s always excellent theater upstairs at 2^nd Story and on weekends at the bistro, there’s live cabaret entertainment.

Speaking of BBQ, the Catfish Grill at 1035 West Shore Road in Warwick is featuring "blues, brews and BBQ" through the month of July. Billing itself as "the only authentic Cajun and BBQ restaurant" (in Rhode Island, I presume), the Grill will be hosting national blues and Zydeco dinner show packages. Looking ahead, there’s Charlestown’s 20^th Annual Seafood Festival coming up on August 6^th, 7^th and 8^th at Ninegret Park in Charlestown. In addition to a wide array of seafood dishes, there will also be rides and games, kids shows, blues and jazz, car shows and kite exhibits, jugglers and cookoffs.

Providence’s own enduring Mexican restaurant, Tortilla Flats at 355 Hope St., is offering a two-fer on Tuesday nights. For $29, it includes one appetizer, two house Margaritas, two entrees and one dessert for just $29.95, tax and gratuity not included. (751-6777).

Another Providence culinary institution, Angelo’s Civita Farnese Restaurant, 141 Atwells Ave., will be celebrating its 80^th anniversary beginning July 14^th. Buy one dinner during their Wednesday night special at the regular price and get a second entrée of equal or lesser value for just 80 cents. Angelo’s is also planning a Customer Appreciation Day on Sept. 25^th. They’ll be closed on Sundays until Sept 5^th and closed for vacation until Monday, July 12^th.

Finally, the Rhode Island Food Bank is requesting donations to fend off this summer’s severe food shortage. They are asking civic groups, work places and places of worship to organize collections of canned goods. Because of the rising prices for fuel and food and housing, there has been a 21% increase in the number of people coming to The Food Bank’s food pantries.
