Upcoming Events

More than 80 restaurants, breweries, wineries and pastry makers will participate in this year’s 17th annual Taste of the Nation held at the Rhode Island Convention Center on Thursday, May 20th. This is perhaps the biggest local food-related event of the year here in The Ocean State and it’s a chance to get a good, general overview of the culinary landscape.

General admission is $50. $100 Patron tickets include a champagne reception and early admission at 6pm. General admission is at 7pm.Tickets/information: 640- FOOD. Tickets can also be purchased at Whole Food Markets, in keeping with its policy to be a neighborhood resource for all things culinary, Providence’s Eastside Marketplace’ Chef’s Club will be holding cooking demonstrations by local chefs at its store on the East Side. The chefs will be creating their signature dishes on Mondays from 3 to 4pm. On May 17th, Becky Dupuis and Michael Quigley form Peabody’s Café, will be cooking up Sunday brunch. On June 7th, Jason Goldman, the pastry chef at Mill’s Tavern on North Main St., will demonstrate how to make two of his favorite desserts with fruits and chocolate. Pre-registration is required and seats are $10 each. Call 831-7771, ext. 227.

Down in Narragansett, a sure sign that spring has arrived is the fact that The Coast Guard House is open for lunch again, Mondays through Fridays from 11:30am to 3pm. Dinner is at 7pm every night and Sunday brunch is from 10am to 2p. And as usual, the view is dazzling.

On Wednesday, May 12, at 6:30pm, Sunflower Café at 162 Mayfield Ave. in Cranston is hosting a "Spring in Sicily" wine dinner featuring a guided wine tasting tour and pairings with a four-course dinner. Wine consultant Fred Macari will introduce you to Sicilian wines from Spadina and Donnafugata. It’s $50 a person plus tax and gratuity. For reservations call 463-6444.

At the Monterey, CA. International Wine Competition this year, Rhode Island’s own Sakonnet Vineyards took home a "Best of Show" award and a gold medal for its 2002 Sakonnet Estate Gewurztraminer. Sakonnet beat out all the other whites in the show, including ones from Germany and France. In total there were more than 1,416 entries and 69gold medals were awarded.
