| VideOpinions Blade: Trinity Four Stars by Brad Brevet, ropeofsilicon.com What is everyone's problem with Blade: Trinity? Personally I enjoyed this film despite its flaws. Come on! It's Blade for cryin' out loud! Granted Blade I & II were superior movies to the third and "final" film in the franchise, but the addition of the Nightstalkers (Biel and Reynolds) was received well on my end and while the ending of the film is lacking in finality I thought it worked well enough for me to say I liked this flick.
Along with the fact that this includes the Unrated edition of the film, you can also still watch the R-rated version if you like, but if you want to listen to the commentary tracks you will be watching the Unrated version as this one includes two of them, but only one that I would recommend watching. The first commentary is writer/director David Goyer along with Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds. What no Snipes? Yeah, if you have paid any attention to the news articles surrounding Snipes and this film you soon realize that he didn't exactly have the greatest time and thanks to subtle hints here and there during the commentary you also realize that he didn't exactly make it a walk in the park for the rest of the cast and crew either. The Biel, Reynolds and Goyer commentary track is far superior to the second commentary with Goyer and the film producers and crew considering a lot of what you are going to get from this second track will be offered up on the second disc in the nearly two hours of making-of features, let's go there now. The second disc contains a 16-part documentary on the making of Blade: Trinity and is offered with a "Play All" function, which I suggest you use, all of this is good stuff. You will learn everything you expect and more, including bits on the casting process, the directing process, the weapons, the sets, the look and even the diets. If you thought Biel and Reynolds looked good for this flick wait until you hear what their workout schedule was like. I know we all want the hard bodies these actors get but unless you have a personal trainer and chef, along with 4 hours a day for working out then it is going to be tough. Jessica Biel even reveals that she isn't exactly sporting the shoulders she was in the film any longer as she says, "Those I miss the most." On top of the making of features you also get a blooper reel (not too funny), a very stupid five-minute segment where the director David Goyer interviews the writer David Goyer, a gallery featuring all the weapons used in the film along with descriptions and a visual effects progression gallery showing exactly what goes into a couple of the facial transformations that are used in the film such as Drake's turn to Dracula and the Pomeranian's gaping maw. One thing that is mentioned on the Goyer, Biel and Reynolds commentary track actually turns out to be an Easter Egg on the second disc as it is the only deleted scene to be found, besides the alternate ending, which I will get to in a second. On the second disc main menu just hit "up" once to highlight the symbol above the first feature selection. Here you will find an alternate meditation scene where Snipes suggested he be hanging upside down instead of the traditional legs-crossed style of meditation. Goyer laughs about it on the commentary track and as you will see, if Snipes had to hang there much longer his head just may have exploded, the vein in his forehead almost comes out of your TV screen. As for the Alternate Ending offered on the disc, it is actually more of a continuation that could have been stamped on the end of the film and actually offers up the chance to explore a Nightstalkers spin-off as Reynolds and Biel are seen hunting down a werewolf in a casino. It is a bit cheesy and definitely should have been cut, but it is pretty cool to see it completely pieced together here. If you are wondering whether to buy the Unrated or the R-rated version of this DVD, just know that the R-rated does not come with the commentaries I mentioned above, and the Unrated does come with the R-rated version as well if you aren't a fan of Unrated DVD editions. The other difference between the two is that the Unrated version not only comes with the Dolby 5.1 audio track, it also comes with a DTS 6.1 track, which all DVD fanatics know blows 5.1 out of the water. Overall, I am very impressed with this DVD set as every feature besides that Goyer interview crap is worth watching and the movie itself is enjoyable each time I watch it, but that is just me, make up your own mind there.
