Season four of "Seinfeld" is considered the breakthrough season as the show caught on like wildfire and secured its Thursday night slot starting what would soon be known as "NBC's Must See TV."
While I could go on for hours about the episodes, and beat it into your head that I don't think there is a sitcom in the world that is as great as "Seinfeld," the one thing this DVD set does that the Season One, Two and Three sets did as well, is bring you some of the greatest special features you are going to see on DVD, providing endless amounts of fun and additional laughs.Similar to the great special features I found on the DVD sets for the British sitcom "The Office," even the featurettes here can make you laugh as everyone is involved in telling the stories of how season four developed. There is a featurette dedicated to this Emmy-winning season of "Seinfeld," looking at the season and how it moved from being considered your average everyday sitcom into the show that followed "Cheers" and became an overnight sensation. There are also several "Inside Looks" scattered throughout the four-disc set, providing short 7-10 minute behind-the-scene looks at the making of several episodes. Each and every one of these is worth a look, and thanks to their short running time, you never lose interest. Next are a group of deleted scenes, which are just as enjoyable to watch as the show itself. My only complaint is that I wish they integrated them into their respective shows, much like Warner Bros. does with their "Friends" DVDs. It just adds that bit of something new. Now we come to what I consider the best of the bunch, the feature called "Not That There's Anything Wrong with That." Here, just like they did on the earlier season releases, you get almost 21 minutes of bloopers and outtakes. What makes these so great is that the camera doesn't stop rolling. An actor flubbing their line is funny, yes, but to see the reactions afterward is where you get the biggest laugh, and that is precisely what you get here as each and every second of this gag reel is worth the price of the collection. The set also includes several TV spots used to promote the show during the season from Olympic themed commercials and commercials promoting the move to Thursday night. Then finally you get my least favorite features of the bunch, the text or "Notes about Nothing" commentaries and the "Yada, Yada, Yada" audio commentaries, which in my opinion are simply boring. Too often I get bored with the text commentary and it just seems to clutter the screen, and as for the audio commentaries they are simply lifeless. Lucky for me, I don't usually like TV DVD commentaries, so it didn't matter an ounce to me. The "Seinfeld" Season Four set is about as impressive as you can get. From 24 episodes of the funniest sitcom ever, to over 13 hours of special features you cannot miss when it comes to these DVD sets. The only problem now is, I have the fourth season and can't wait for the fifth. Visit the official Seinfeld website. |
